Hi Scott,
Glad to hear that you noticed that the vines seem to develop a
bit later than other areas. I happened to find a calendar put
out for my area (Chattanooga, TN) that lists the average
highs/lows for every day of the year. I find it interesting
that the average low temperature for the summer starts dropping
on August 4 and the high starts dropping about the same time. I
think just for an experiment, I am going to wait and set a
pumpkin on one of my two vines this coming weekend. The other I
am going to wait until around August 4. That's almost exactly
60 days before the Allardt, TN weighoff which I plan on
attending, pumpkins to take or not. I'll be glad to let you and
anyone else who is interested how the later pumpkin turns out
versus the earlier one.
The Agricultural Exposition that I spoke of is not really a
fair. It is really a farm equipment show. Although it is
geared mainly to farmers, especially large-scale, there are a
huge number of people who attend. My late uncle, Dr. Ed White,
was the Director of the event until the year before he died. My
cousin in Tifton, GA tells me that most of the hotels south of
Macon, GA to almost Florida, are all filled that time of year.
The only time during the year it happens. Since it is in the
middle of October, most of the pumpkin weighoffs have occurred
and thus it would not interfere with those events. If someone
in your state has the largest pumpkin in the Southeast this year
and they want to have it displayed there, let me know and I will
talk to my cousin and see what arrangements would have to me
made. Of course, this really could apply to any grower from any
state. As a matter, of fact, the more large pumpkins that are
on display, whether they are from Canada or Virginia or
whereever, the more likely it may spur the interest of some of
the growers in the South (since that is where it is taking
place) or elsewhere.
When will your State Fair be held this year? Will it be in
Richmond? My wife and I have several friends in the Northern
Virginia area that we have been wanting to visit this year.
Maybe we can visit them and catch the fair at the same time.
In my area we have been having a very wet and cool
Spring/Summer. Hopefully, it will produce some good pumpkins
anyway. The only thing I have really worry about is hail. Just
missed getting some in the last thunderstorm we had.
Good luck to you and all of the growers in your state this year.
Maybe you'll get some nice surprises.
Steve Smith
