Tough break on Viagra vine

A very thick, (and inflexible) primary vine just snapped this afternoon -
pretty much ending a Murphy's Law season for me. The last 3 feet of the vine had
been growing almost straight up in the air. I piled up extra soil under the
vine in the hopes of easing the stress as its weight brought it back down, but
it broke off anyway. Temperature was in the mid-80's today, so I was
surprised the vine was so rigid.

Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to prevent this type of break
and if there is anything that can be done to the plant to make it more
flexible. I had high
aspirations this year, but best I can hope for now is a small pumpkin on a
secondary
vine.
