Mark,
Another method you might want to try.  You will need a pair of binoculars,
some tweezers, and a small jar with a lid.  Hide in your regular hiding
place.  When you see the groundhog, look at him through the binoculars
backwards.  This will make him very small.  Then all you have to do is pick
him up with the tweezers and put him in the jar.
