Thank you very much for your help I have already cut the vine on the
advice of the first few growers to respond as it was a critical
situation. The vine had already started to push into the skin and all
figuring was correct you hit the nail on the head. This is my third year
growing and I can't believe the growth of this pumpkin and plant.
Especially with it hitting over 100 degrees here in Sutter Ca. almost
every day this month
Thanks again Dennis

Dennis,
I am trying to figure out your situation. It sounds to me like your
pumpkin
is going to start to grow out over the main vine, correct? If this is
the
case and you can't move the main vine anymore to compensate for the
quick
growth of the pumpkin then you will have to cut the main vine (past the
pumpkin). Otherwise the weight of the pumpkin will crush the vine and
the
vine can also cause damage to the tender, growing, young pumpkin. The
vine
can cut into the pumpkin at this growth stage or any stage of your
growing
season. These pumpkins never develop a tough skin like Connecticut
Field
Pumpkin.
Also remember where the stem of the pumpkin connects to the main vine is
a
very critical area for stress, make sure the shoulders (back) of the
pumpkin
doesn't start to push back in growth and cause stress to the main vine
and
stem of the pumpkin in that area (as well). Also, relive this area on
the
main vine, check under the stalks of the leaves where they meet the
ground
and cut the tap root out underneath each leave to allow the vine to lift
as
the pumpkin grows, do this 4 to 6 feet before the pumpkin and 4 to 6
feet +
after the pumpkin.
This is only my opinion, see what other growers may say and have for
advice
to help you out and then make a decision.
Good luck,
