Hi, I my name is Mark Fowler and I am new to the list. I have a couple
questions I hope someone can answer. To begin with I live in Central
Virginia and have tried to grow Atlantic Giants in the past with no luck. I
recently moved to a new home and found that I have the richest dark soil I
have ever seen in this area. I decided this spring that before I committed
to attempting another AG that I would experiment with a Big Max seed this
year and see how things go in the new soil. To say the least I have been
amazed! The growth rate has been phenomenal and the plants (I have 2) are
extremely healthy. I planted in two large hills mixed with horse manure and
add Miracle Grow once a week.
I started my seed on May 15th and have main vines over 20 feet long at this
time. One plant already has a pumpkin approximately 13 feet from the stem
and about the size of a basketball and it is growing by leaps and bounds.
One question is, am I setting fruit to soon and therefore will have mature
pumpkins to early in the fall? I realize these pumpkins will only grow to
100 pounds or so but would like to have them survive until Halloween.
Are Big Max plants similar to Atlantic Giants as far as how big the plants
get?
Is the Big Max also a Hybrid cross with a squash and therefore an attractant
for squash bugs and squash vine borers?
Are the same techniques used to grow the Big Max plants used to get the big
boy AG's?
Am I correct in assuming that soil which will grow healthy Big Max also have
the same result with AG's?
Hopefully with what I learn with these pumpkins this year I can have a good
year with the Atlantic Giants next year.
Thanks,
Mark
