Lots of people use sand (very fine...play sand) as a growing base for their  
pumpkins. You can use to help position the fruit and it also drains moisture  
away from the fruit and prevents critters from attacking from the bottom. At 
the  size of your 'kin any adjustment is going to be a challenge. Be careful, 
go  slow, a second set of hands would be helpful. Try to reposition the vine 
away  from the fruit as opposed to moving the fruit very much. Also, be sure to 
cut  the secondary roots (at each leaf axil) to allow vine to raise up with 
fruit  growth. This will help keep stress off the vine. Hope this helps. Peace
