sand, or mill fabric don't use straw as it will get wet and stay wet.

Always a good question....In past years...I have just kept them under the
tarp tents and they don't get wet so very dry under them so they don't
rot....I also raise them up 2-4" from the normal ground level with more
dirt (I have sandy soil)...about a 4x4x(2-4)" area.
I also during the season will "bathe" them with a bleach solution? (1: 15
water) and use a sponge to keep them free of fungus, etc.
