Like Jim said it's the aphids, ants and aphids live in a symbiotic
relationship, the aphids provide the ants with honeydew a sweet substance that
they produce and in return the ant provide them with protection and even carry
them to need feeding grounds i.e. your plants, the ant/aphid relationship is
often compared to ranchers/cattle.
So if you see ants you might want to inspect for aphids, noting that not all
ants are aphid ranchers.
