Diane: I usually have a small cloud of cucumber beetles and squash bugs like
ants at a picnic on my plants. A fellow grower recommended Merit and Talstar
One. End of bugs giving me the upraised middle finger. Pleased, I am. Good
luck, and yes, growing giants IS a lot of work. I hope it pays off for both
of us this year. With you, may the Force be. Steve.

I've been watching my vines like a hawk to be sure I didn't have any squash
bugs. Up until yesterday I thought I was doing fine. I'd found a few eggs
and a very few bugs, but been disposing of them nicely and thought I'd have
no
problem. I've been feeding the vines Imidacloprid (is that the right
spelling?) every two weeks to be sure that they were systemically protected,
and sprinkling with Sevin as well. Then about four days ago my volunteer
sugar baby pumpkins started showing up with squash bugs. By this morning
those sugar baby vines are dead. I had sprinkled heavily with Sevin and
they
used it for an aphrodisiac. I sprayed this morning with malathion and they
all sang and danced in it as if they were being sprinkled with blessings. I
took a bucket of soapy water out and shook the leaves over it, so the little
suckers would drown in soapy water. Maybe I could spray the vines with soapy
water? Is this a good idea? Anyway, now
I'm headed for the hardware store this afternoon for Triazicide. They'll
think sing and dance...Thanks for that information. Maybe I can avert the
dreaded SVB. That's the only thing except frost that hasn't plagued me so
far. I've had high wind, 105 degrees in mid-June, hail, bugs and more bugs
and weeds and my husband cultivating out my new plants. This pumpkin growing
is one &*()_@^^% of a lot of work.
cheers,
duchess of gladstone
