Just got a reply from a fellow grower here in Vermont with many years of
experience.  Based on examination of a photo I sent him, the verdict on my
spot is a scar.  I didn't notice it when the AG was small, but now that it's
ballooning, the blemish is very noticeable.  WHEW!!!  Maybe I can breath now a
little bit, eh?
