Bebbie--leaves as you describe are of no use to the plant so it's best to
just take a knife and cut them off.
If you end up with a leafless clean dry stump that you can spray with
fungicide occasionally I think that is ideal.
Leaves closest to the stump are the oldest and will normally die first.

Does anyone cut off leaves that are yellowing or just bad? Also is it
normal for leaves closest to the stump to die?
Dying near the stump hasn't happened yet, but I want to be prepared since it
has happened in the past.
