It has been in triple digits here all week. My vines are thriving from, I
assume, plenty of water. My squash and melons are doing well also. I run the
soakers for @ 8 to 10 hours every other day. The soil is damp but not
drenched. I believe soaking the leaves in the sun is actually more
detrimental. It will actually burn them from the intense sun. If you put
them to bed wet you are going to have fungi and powdery mildew problems.
Drench your soil from below the canopy. I give @ 80 - 100 gallons of water
to them per session. I am fortunate to have sandy loam and glacial till
which has ideal drainage properties. Hang in there....cool down by Monday!!!

Ok, I was doing what someone suggested. THe vines are getting water from
the
sprinkler but I agree about the potential fungus problem. What do you do to
keep the plants cool and prevent heat stress?

Deb,
Misting the tops of the leaves in this humid weather is asking for a fungal
disaster. As long as your vines are getting water, they will be fine.

I would like to mist the leaves from the top to help cool them down and help
with flagging during the 90+ days. My next project is a drip system using
PVC
but don't even want to address that until I get the misters figured out.

Soaker hose. T tape. I am as smart as a chimpanzee and they are working like
a charm in 100-102 degree weather.

What is a booster pump? I was thinking of filling my rain barrel with
water,
running hose from barrel to inline pump to 1/4 inch tubing. I could time
how
long it takes to drain the barrel and keep the garden hose running to match
the
flow. The other thing is I have another 6 misters around my second plant.
Ideally I would like to tie these into the first plant for a matter of ease.
The inline pump is 1/2 HP.

You may need a booster pump.
