Debbie, If your plant keeps aborting, try selfing it. Often, a plant will mutate where it will only except, or prefer it's own pollen. Like the 895 Hester Squash.

Last fall after I removed about 1300+ sf of grass, I had a soil test done after I tilled it about 5 times and had them interpreted. I also brought in 10 yards of mushroom compost this spring and added the soil amendments from the soil test analysis. I thought I was doing everything ok. One of my plants is from the 
Illinois state record for last year.

Sometimes these plants are sterile and just don't produce...I had another one this year...plus others I've had will grow them to about basketball size and then they abort. I have other friends who have seen similar things...probably why I grow 10 plants...last year..had just 4 left after it was all said and done with a max of 7 one year...I think Kevin Marsh once told me he started 
with 12 and ended up with 3.  Just the luck of the draw.
It for sure can also be environmental as Ray is suggesting...heat or wet on 
the females can  stop them from developing not enough calcium, etc, etc.
I would have a soil sample is done for next year(especially if you didn't this 
year)... Sorry about your season...hopefully something changes.
