Hi Joe,
I too am having the ends of some vines snap.
At first I blamed the dog (poor Scooter got
spanked for nothing - oh well that'spayback for
tearing out my impatiens). Now I'm convinced
that the darn vines are growing too fast and the
stress is breaking them. They get a wicked curl
on the end and then .....snap! I think the
answer to the question is to back off the
nitrogen.

Hello,
Tragedy has hit my patch. Came home
from work today and found the end of the main
vine and oldest side vine had been broken off
and was hanging. I buried the main vine at the
break hoping it will survive.
Can't believe that the rain was so heavy last
night that it could snap the end like nothing. I still
have 2 unpollinated pumpkins at about 12 and
13 ft., but that doesn't leave much vine growth
past the pumpkin.
Has anyone ever had the ends snap off like that
. If the main vine doesn't continue to grow will
this still be a good place to grow a pumpkin. Any
thoughts on this.
Thanks, Joe, Logan, Ohio

Mike, Joe, I have seen rapid growth break vine ends several years ago and it
almost happened to me on the Zehr plant this year. What seems to happen is
the rapid growth twists the leaf stems up in the vine end and the stems exert
pressure on the vine snapping it during the fast growth at night when the
vines are brittle. What I did to prevent this is untangle the stems from
under the vines in the late afternoon when they are a little limp. This
seems to prevent the problem.
