Wind and Cold in Minnesota

As you have already read on the this forum, it has been quite cool in
Minnesota this past week. The good news is that it is warming up again.
Before the cool weather, we had several storms pass through the area and
had strong winds for two days. During that time, the wind blew 25 to 35
MPH all day. As you can guess this played havoc with the pumpkin plants.
Most of my main vines with hoops over them survived about as well as one
would expect. However, most of the secondary vines were twisted and the
vines were split in many places. Many leaves were broken off or torn. Not
a pretty sight.
This slowed the growth of the plants and of course, pollination. The
plants are starting to recover and pollination has been going on all week.
So, all is not lost. Hopefully, one of my 12 plants will still produce a
big one.
In the past, I have never placed anything under the pumpkins and have
had no problems. For best results, should I place sand, styrofoam, etc.
under the pumpkins or should I do as I have in the past - nothing?
