Hello Lisa.
Buring the vines or should I say burying them at the
leaf nodes encourages a small root system to grow at that point. Not only
does this provide more goodies for the plant but also fixs the plant to the
ground and prevents it being blown around.
But don't let these small roots grow on the vine near your pumpkin. Because
as the pumpkin grows it will lift the vine with it and if the vine is stuck
to the ground the vine might snap.
Remember to have the fruit 90 degrees to the vine, if its not, then move it
a little each day in the hottest part of the day. Good luck!

why is burying vines a must? What is the purpose of burying the vines?
I have a plant that has grown about 15 feet and one of the pumpkins has
pollinated...where and when do i bury the vines?
