Duncan,
I had the same problem last year. Squirrels were the culprits!
Since then I have been spreading "blood meal" around my pumpkins. The
drawback is that after every rain you have to reapply. It's not a
guarantee but so far so good for me this year!! I only do this untill the
pumpkin is basketball size after that the squirrels have no more interest.
