Re: vine/stem position

Bev,
I wouldn't put a rough wooden pallet under it. Just relax and enjoy that
monster right on the ground. If you like, you can put a piece of that
landscape (weedblock fabric under it if you like). The pumpkin should be
perpendicular to the vine and this can't be done in one move or you will
crack it off. Move the pumpkin about an inch a day , until it is at a right
angle to the vine. Cut the tap roots under the main vine about 2 feet in each
direction to allow the vine to rise up with the growing pumpkin. If you have
a side vine wrapped tightly around the pumpkin, cut it off to relieve the
stress. If you find that the stem is still pulling away from the vine, you
can gently lift the blossom end a little and put some soil under the blossom
end (like a ramp). By raising the blossom end, you are lowering the stem end
and relieving the stem stress. I can't stress enough, that any moves must be
done gradually over a period of a week or you will crack the pumpkin off. All
veterans have done this. A pumpkin gives no warning if you move it too
much....POP and it is cracked off...be careful.
