Progress Report

Out of my original 25 plantings I have 15 survivors at this point. All are
under irrigation. I have been having trouble getting fruit to set, this
could be due to the lack of bees to pollinate and the heat which has been
in excess of 90 degrees for three weeks now. At the suggestion of Tim
Canniff I tried hand pollinating last week and this appears to be doing the
trick it looks like I have about 20 fruit that have managed to make it to
the size of softballs or larger. I checked everything this AM and here
goes:

1 - Baird 652 3 fruit set 3 seperate vines, longest 30 ft.

2 - Baird 774 2 fruit set 2 vines longest 25 feet.

3 - Stellpflug 730 no fruit set, vines 15 feet.

4 - Caniff 459 1 fruit set, vines 20 feet.

5 - Caniff 459 2 fruit set, vines very long and mixed, at least 4 vines
branching off main.

6 - Caniff 459 1 fruit set, vines intermixed with #5.

7 - Brock 4 - 500 3 fruit set, large strong vines 30 feet.

8 - 11 Brock 4 - 500's no fruit set, all have vines in excess of 20 feet

12 - Brock 4 - 500 1 fruit set, vines in excess of 30 feet.

13 - Brock 4 - 500 no fruit set, vines intermixed with 12.

14 - Brock 4 - 500 4 fruit set, vines in excess of 35 feet. Largest fruit
about size of grapefruit.

15 - Brock 4 - 500 3 fruit set, vines in excess of 35 feet, many female
flowers, 1st to produce blooms, hardest to set.

I have sprayed with Maneb fungicide, sevin, thiodan and malathion
insecticides and seem to be having some success keeping disease and bugs to
a manageable level. I plan to go with some 20-20-20 this week to start
feeding the fruit.

Any suggestions, Ideas or Comments?
