Does anyone know why a female blossom flower would shrivel up just
before it looks as if it was to open in a day or so? I think
one of these shriveled females was on my cracked stem, so that one I
can understand. But I have another one on a different plant that
seems to have shriveled up. The rest seem OK. Any ideas?

Not uncommon, my 553 plant did that to 3 blossoms before it started to
produce mature flowers then set 3 pumpkins in a row. I also threaten to pull
it out just before it started to produce.
