Re: Pollen Count

Marv:

Last year I took the time to count all the seeds viable and not, and
determine the percentage of viable seeds per pumpkin. Mainly because being a
first year grower I initially started pollinating with only one male, mostly
because I only had one available at a time but also because I just missed
that tip along the way on the first 5 pumpkins.

The results were surprising. The two pumpkins with the most pollinated seeds
were actually from single male pollinations on 5 segment females.

Additionally I reviewed time of pollination with respect to some later
pollinated ones and my journal notes. Later in July after the 16th by my log
I felt that the males didn't have as much pollen regardless of how early I
got up to beat the heat.

Any veterans have any comments regarding my observations from last year?

Jim
