Trust me there are no stupid questions on this list , I'm fairly new to this list
and have learned a lot since joining it . I thought I'd answer this as sort of a
test to see if I've learned as much as I thought.
To hand pollenate a pumpkin you need to get to the female as soon as it opens, to
prevent stray pollens from being introduced to your pumpkin. I used to use a sable
haired paint brush to collect the pollen from the malees but apparently it is
preferred to pick the male and use the flower itself . Incidently, the female has
a little pumpkin shaped stem in the flower. after CAREFULLY rubbing the pollen on
the female tie the female bloom closed to prevent invaders and have a cigarette.
If you live in a very hot climate 90 deg.
or better, you will need to arrange to cool the blossom 'frozen milk jugs and
tents are the preferred method I've seen.
The reason you hand pollenate is to insure your pumpkin isnt pollenated by what
you want it pollenated with and not the neighbors jack be little. this is
important as it will effect your seeds (If your not aware of it, genetics is very
important in giant pumpkin growing, I had no Idea before coming here.) more so
than the pumpkin your growing this year. I hope this help's and all of you who are
the experts please jump in and straighten any errors out thanks to, all mike in
anc.
