Heavy hitter question

This question is directed primarily at those who have been growing for a
number of years.

The current school of thought dicates the setting of several pumpkins
per plant and gradually culling the undesirable until only those most
promising remain. Has anyone been able to determine any kind of pattern
regarding those that are left to grow? I believe there was a theory a
while back that stated the first pollinated would inevitably grow the
largest. Any truth to that? Vine selection? Number of lobes? Distance
from the main root? Are there any trends yet established that we should
be aware of?
