The tarp is used to:
1) Reduce the amount of sunlight on the pumpkin to help keep the shell
soft. This allows the pumpkin to stretch and grow much easier.
2) Keep the soil dry beneath the pumpkin. I do not place sand, etc. under
the pumpkin and I have not had any problems.
3) Help keep hail stones off the pumpkin in case of a severe storm.
4) Helps keep stray cows, deer, etc from walking through and over the
pumpkin. :)
