Fwd: HOW MUCH fertilizer?!

There was a recent post by Brock regarding how much fertilizer to give your
plants. I talked to an expert at Miracle Grow and posed the following
question. If you had a 1000 gallon tank of water and a 1000 square foot garden
and you were watering enough to give the garden one inch of water per week
(640 gallons of water) and you only wanted to add enough Miracle Grow to your
water such that you would only be replacing the fertilizer used by your
pumpkin plant and that which leached out of the soil from watering and if you
soil was 70% sand, 20% silt and 10% clay with 10% organic matter, how much
Miracle grow would you add to the 1000 gallon tank of water? He told me to add
8 pounds of Miracle Grow Tomato (lower in phosphate than the regular). What do
you think of this advice? And how much does one cup of Miracle Grow (16
Tablespoons) weigh? Help me with this Brock.

Steve,

This is a common question.....and there is no fixed formula by all
growers....they all do different amounts of fertilizing...according to the
soil test...it is best to stay within the reccomendation on the package and
stay consistent,,,,,,, that amount of fert,,,,,was put into how many
gallons of water?........i have a 300 gallon tank and it makes it easier to
figure the right ratio 16 table spoons to a cup and thats only for 16
gallons so for the whole tank takes about 18 cups I use half that
amount.or 1/4 of that..so mine equals about a 1/2 Tb. per gallon.......but
it sounds outrageous like 8lbs of fert..........brock
