Mammoth Pumpkin on the Vine

VITTORIA. Ont. (CP) - This could be the summer which Ken Armstrong sets the pumpkin-growing world on its ear.
In his backyard near Vittoria, south of Simcoe, lies a pumpkin estimated to weigh 160 kilograms (352 lbs).
If t he gourd maintains its current pace without cracking, it should eclipse the record of 482 kg set in New York state in 1996.
It's been an unreal year. Everything is up and down. Some people have nothing to speak of and a lot of my vines are doing nothing, Armstrong said.
"But I have this one that's gone crazy." Armstrong could win a $50,000 prize if the pumpkin tops the 546-kilogram mark (1200 lbs.).
Records of a 460-kg pumpkin grown in Stouffville, Ont. two years ago (Hoult's) demonstrate the possibilities of Armstrong's pumpkin. That pumpkin - which came in 20 kg shy of the world record - didn't reach the size of Armstrong's until mid-August. It also didn't make it to the scales.
Armstrong attributes his success to planting his vines early. Most growers wait for the warm weather to arrive, but he had his in by May 1.
Armstrong produced a 396-kg (870 lbs.) pumpkin last year, one of the five largest in the local area.

Does anyone know about the 1200 lb $50,000 prize that they are talking about?
Or is this just Newspaper Lies?
Bob
