Well first, when I checked my first pumpkin hill yesterday, it had a couple
male flowers open. And in them were a few dozen cucumber beetles. Here we go
again. I cut the flowers off and immediately plunged them in a strong Sevin
solution. They swam around for 10 minutes and tried crawling out of the bowl.
THEY WILL NOT DIE!
They are "Super cucumber beetles", a new hybrid beetle bred by all the
gardeners who have used chemicals on them for years. WE ARE ALL SCREWED NOW!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! (AM I over-reacting? Just let me know)!
Anyway, when I plunged the closed flowers in the solution, I heard buzzing,
like a bee. Of course there was a bee in it, so I tried to let him (her) out
withough letting the beetles out, and without getting stung. She flew away.
But the SAME THING happened with the second flower! Has anyone else had the
weird occurance of bees getting trapped in the flowers when they close up in
the evening?!
Also, I wanted to mention that I soaked my new 627 Hester seed overnight
Friday night, then put it in a moist paper towel into a baggie until this
afternoon. The thing is, as of this (Sunday) afternoon it still hasn't
sprouted. I was pretty sure that it should show some signs of sprouting by
now. Shouldn't it?! When Beth Rado sent me some seeds, she soaked them
oveernight and did the napkin and baggie thing, and when I got them the next
day, they had nice little roots coming out of them. SO of course I get all
scared, because the whole deal I went through with the Brock 1006x941 seeds
keeps haunting me. None of them sprouted. And I am REALLY nervous about the
Hester seed, since now it would be my only real hope of growing anything
really big, since it grows so fast, etc. So if anything happens to THIS seed,
I am going to need therapy.
So do you think a seed should have spouted by Sunday, if it was soaked
overnight Friday evening, and put in a moist paper towel Saturday? The other
thing is it got soaked for about 14-16 hours, is that too long?!
