Hi Gang,
Just a line to say I've got one pumpkin on
one vine that has shifted into gear real good.
My OTT estimated weight as of yesterday
was 74.81 lbs. This plant has tried to put
on more fruit, but they all abort at baseball
or softball size. I could never be there to
hand pollinate them, so that is that. I'm
going to cut, apply a Captan paste to that
area and bury the main about 6 feet past
the fruit, and all of the secondaries. It has
gained over 35 lbs. over the past four days
so it's a pretty safe bet that it will be the
one to keep. Two of the other plants have
2 pumpkins each and I'm still waiting on
the other 11 to start setting fruit as the vines
are about long enough now. Grass has gone
wild lately due to rain and is preventing the
roots at the leaf junction from reaching good
soil. So I've gotta pile the dirt on heavier than
usual to get past that. Otherwise, the North
Carolina giant has a vine that's very yellow
with green streaks occassionally and is quite
a contrast to the Atlantic Giant plants. Also
have an AG that's got a real green fruit that
the bees set yesterday and I'm betting that
it'll be a squash. Time will tell. I'll be in touch.
