Re: Vine positioning

I think what is more apt to happen if one does not get a FULL 90 degree
angle of the pumpkin stem to the vine, and hopefully on the outside of
the curve, is that the shoulder will begin to press against the main
vine threatening to break off the pumpkin's stem if you don't do
something. The only thing I know to do at that point is to cut the
pumpkin away from the main vine on the far side between the shoulder and
the stem. If the stress is on the inside there is nothing I know of that
you can do. Pumkinguy?

I agree

I had this problem last year, exactly as you describe, shoulder pushing
against main vine and starting to split . As you say, the only solution I
could see was to remove main vine past pumpkin. I did this and finished the
season. If I hadn't,
I'm sure my pumpkin would have destroyed itself.

I believe new growers should learn as much as possible about positioning. Last
years experience convinced me that it is a critical element for growing a big
one. I'm still experimenting with several techniques. When these Giants get
going they don't give you much time, so start positioning early, and carefully.
