	 Hi All!

I must say, this is one of the most entertaining and
informative lists
I've ever had the pleasure to lurk. I especially enjoy the
poety of
Pumpkin Flower. You should consider publishing your work.

My husband wanted to grow a giant pumpkin, so I planted six
Dill's
Atlantic Giant plants, almost as an afterthought. Now I have
six
pumpkins growing, one of which grows by leaps and bounds each
day. Just
ten days ago it was the size of a softball, and now its
diameter is 40"!
I am more excited than my husband. Every morning and every
evening I go
out to check on it and give it words of encouragement. However,
I am
worried. Last year I had a terrible infestation of squash bugs,
the
sheild back insects some call stink bugs. They took out all my
squash,
even killed the zucchini (we were actually happy to see that
die). Every
night I search under leaves for the tiny eggs and squish 'em.
So far, I
been able to keep them under control, but now I have hundreds
of leaves
to check and the plants continue to sprawl. Is there anything
else I
could use? I bought some Sevin, but I haven't used it because I
don't
want to kill the pollinating honey bees that moved into a
nearby maple
tree. Is there anything out there that targets just these icky
bugs?

	Hi Team

Last year our best ever pumpkin was sent to the landfill while I
was
away for a few days so seeds went with it. (A plaque of toads to
those
	who sent it there).

Our seed supplier in New Zealand has stopped supplying AG's and
gone
instead to the Big Moon variety.

Our funding for festivals etc (I work for a local authority who
pays for
the expenses of running the pumpkin grow/festival) has been
considerably reduced so there is a scarcity of good AG seed in
New
Zealand. We do have some left over from previous years and some
from the
pumpkin in my back yard BUT. We need some bulk seed (about 5
pound in
total) to get the population going. We expect 350 - 400+ growers
as this
is our third year and we are quite famous throughout the land
for our
	'pumpkin grow'.

Could anybody send some spare seed please. The postal address is
John
Sargeant, Parks and Recreation, South Taranaki District Council.
PO Box
	902, Hawera, New Zealand.

I can send a small NZ gift to those who are able to respond. Our
Council
has seriously slashed budgets and I am determined that the
annual
pumpkin grow and weigh - off, will not be a casualty.

	Thank you in advance.

	Have a 'Parky' day.
	John S.

	Hi All,
Here's an update from Boonville, CA. My two plants are
doing
great. Thanks to Mike Brock for coming over to see them. My
largest plant
has set fruit. I have elimiated all but four pumpkins. I am
positioning
the vine and fruit. Probably by Friday I will be down to two
fruit. My
second plant is about a week behind the other plant. I still
have not
narrowed down to a few fruit, but I have identified the best so
far. Most
of the small pumpkins on this plant are growing at great angles
and need
very litte positioning. I'm getting ready to put up some shade
structures.
Luckily the weather here has been quite nice. This week it has
been foggy
until noon, but who knows about next week it may be 100 plus.
After having trapped the one gopher I haven't had any
more problems
	in the patch.
Next week I am going to Maui so I am getting a pumpkin
sitter.

	Aloha,
	Beth in Boonville

	Stacey,
Thank you , glad you enjoy the poems . I really enjoy writing
them. If you
like pumpkin poetry you should check out Tony Hickmans web page
he is the
ppm (pumpkin poem master) (although I hear he may have resently
been
dethroned in some kind of wild Austalian email Ku)

What ever you end up spraying , if you spray in the evening
after the
flowers have closed ,you won't harm the bees (or so I'm told).
Good luck
	and good growing.
	Ta Ta 4 Now,

Yes I have an outy and an inny. as the pumpkin grows your outty
will
mostlikly become an inny. What ever it is in the end, PLEASE
DON"T pierce it
,that really grosses me out. Plus it could cause your pumpkin to
rot. I
don't inclued the outy part in my measurment it seems like
cheating, I kind
	of measure next to it.

After the groundhogs got through eating my vines, all growth of
the pumpkin
appears to have ceased. THis groundhog has wiped out my garden.
I will
ultimately get him but it is now too late for this year. I am
very fortunate
to have a second garden. For those who have considered using the
plastic deer
fence for groundhog control, forget it. Groundhogs are not even
slowed down by
deer fencing. They eat right through the plastic. It doesn't
even slow them
down. They are also able to dig under buried wire if they really
want into the
garden. I have developed a new respect for the groundhog and its
determination
if it sees something it wants to eat.

	A serious matter, indeed!

For the sake of pumpkindom we must come to the rescue
of our antipoditarian (is that the word?) friends!

I have only 6 biggies in my deep-freeze stash, but I'll mail you
3
	of them.

Again, John, when do you plant? - I mean, can you wait till
our harvest for seeds, or will you need them before?

I have a 40 lb pumpkin about 10 ft out that seems to have
stopped growing about
a week ago. Any reason why? It looks healthy, is in the shade
under its' cover.
I have buried the vine all the way out to it, and there is a
relative paucity
of leaves between it and the original vine--can too few leaves
stunt growth?
Need more water? more??? thanks for any advice. . .B

Deepest symapthy on your pumpkin losses.
I to am fighting the evil wood chuck, and know the damage that
can be done.
If you have a pumpkin left at all don't give up, make a cage
around the
pumpkin it self . Plants can regrow, if you still have the main
vine.
Tomatoes as bait in traps worked for us.
I f you can find there holes or dens you have a good chance of
winning. Can
you borrow a friends dog to tie out near the garden for a few
evenings ??
That seems the most active time for them here.
Good luck , a fellow wood chuck victim

	Hi,
this is only my second year growing so I'm no expert BUT, last
year after
i picked my pumpkins , I pulled the plants to see the root balls
,and they
had been eaten up by what I call potatoe bugs , (sow bugs?) try
putting down
a flatt board near your plant base and lift it the next morning
if there are
a million potatoe bugs under there that could be it .
	just a guess.
	Good Luck

What kind of wire are you using on the ground. You might try
chicken wire
just under the surface a few inches. I don't know if they can
chew through
this or not. You will have to haul dirt to the plant to cover
the vines. I
	haven't tried this, it's only an idea. I'm lucky, I don't have
these little
	critters to deal with.
