I've used these fabrics around plants other than pumpkins, and
generally found them very effective, however, if you are thinking
of using a landscaping fabric to suppress weeds, it might be
worth considering the type which is black on the lower surface
and white on the upper. In theory anyway, the white surface
reflects light back to the under-surface of the plants and is
supposed to speed fruit-ripening. It also avoids over-heating of
the area in direct contact with the plants, which can be a
problem where a dark-coloured fabric is used.
It might also be a bit awkward if you want to bury the vines to
encourage stem-rooting, although I suppose you could cut holes in
the fabric. I think a loose mulch might be easier to manage.
