icing pumpkins

Hello Fellow Growers, While going through the
archives I've heard mention of icing pumpkins. Can anyone tell me the
theory on this? What exactly does it do? Obviously it cools it but what exactly
does this accomplish? Does it help to set it? Does it keep it from developing
splits or cracks in very hot weather? What temps should this be done at? Is it
really neccesary? Just wondering. Pauline
