Lake Water

I have a large lake right over the hill from my garden. Since we are in
the middle of a
drought, Can I use this water for my Pumpkins?
                Im not sure if this will help them or hurt them. If
there is any bacteria or
something in the water will this hurt my pumpkins?  I remember reading
about kelp
and fish being good for the plants but I figure it would be wise to ask
someone a little
more knowledgable on this matter.
