I always theorized that splits were caused by imbalances, rather than just
"growing too fast". Something is out of balance. The inner wall is growing
out of balance with the outer wall. It also could be caused by too much water
taken up into the fruit too fast, but this also could be because of some sort
of imbalance.
Of course other things like sun, fast rise in heat, (which would cause water
to expand fast in the pumpkin) could cause it too. But this might happen at a
weak spot which developed early, which might have been caused by, yes, an
imbalance!
Water and fertilizer have to be balanced with the outside temperature. There
should be some formula worked out.
Also, someone should compile data from all of these pumpkins that split the
same way, and determine what things are similar in all the situations. This
would help clue everyone in on the causes.
