Too fast...Excessive growth

I've been following the concerns of excessive early growth and the
possibility of blow-outs over the past day.
If the pumpkin is prone to splitting I personally would rather have it
happen while I have a few others on the vine. This early in the season
it may set you back a few days but it's not the end of growing a
competitive pumpkin. On my plants I've been looking for the pumpkins
with the vigorous growth. The #1 plant is a 780 Eaton'98 which covers
about 900sq foot as of today. It has 2 extremely vigorous pumpkins.
The first one is on the secondary vine and was pollinated 5/25. That
makes it 15 days today. This evening it measured 51 3/4" circ. It had
a growth of 7" on day 11. Everything looks good so far. If it splits,
I'll be upset but still have others on the vine. The other one on the
vine that has potential was pollinated 7/3, which makes it 7 days old
today. It measured 23 1/2" this evening, well ahead of the first
pumpkin. I'm sure the hot weather of the past 2 weeks had alot to do
with the early growth, but if it slows down and continues at a 2-4" per
day growth it will still be further ahead. At this point I am not
over-feeding them, actually they receive fertilization no more
frequently than once a week. I just pray that when I go out in the
morning they are still in one piece.
