Fruit Flies?

Hi all,
I need some help identifying some pest.
It's nailing both my butternut squash and my pumpkins.
Whatever it is, it's "stinging" the small fruits, laying eggs inside, and
then these little worms lay waste to the meat inside.
I was told that it could be fruit flies. Do they like pumpkins? What
insecticide should I use?
BTW, the butternut squash puts out female flowers long before the male
flowers start, exactly the opposite of the pumpkins. It was kinda upsetting
losing all those females before the males started appearing. Is there any
way to spur the growth of one gender of flower?
