cull females downstream?

If I set a nice-looking pumpkin on my vine, is it advisable to chop off
the females farther down that vine? I'm wondering if allowing those
flowers (and their pumpkins) to develop might increase chances of
a spontaneous abortion of my already set fruit. Since I already have
four or five fruit that have just set on other side vines I think that
it might be a good idea to start chopping them off downstream from this
one, but who knows, these little pumpkins can still abort up to, what,
basketball size, right? And Atlantic Giants are such weird plants, I
almost wonder if it might be advisable to keep as many pumpkins on as
possible at first, to sort of get the sap or whatever it is flowing.
Ideas? What about fertilizing while these things are setting? I've
stopped am wondering when it's safe to start up again. In case you
can't tell, I'm pretty edgy--I really want these pumpkins on there to
stay!
