East Central Alabama Update!

Group,
On July 6th I began measuring a pumpkin on the 682.4 Castellucci 96
plant. Using OTT method, I had a total measurement of 96.0 inches which
calculates to 23.52 lbs. Yesterday, exactly one week later, the total
measurement was 150.0 inches, or 80.61 lbs.! Unbelieveable! I've named
this one "Abracadabra" and yesterday I put up a picnic table umbrella up
next to it so it now has plenty of shade. I have many small pumpkins on
the 576 and the two 622.6's, but none are at this growth stage as of yet. In
regards to the chat about high potassium fertilizer, the local county Co-Op
store has 50 lb. bags of 0-0-60 which last year ran about $6.00 a bag.
That's
a lot of bang for the buck and I plan to use it as a supplement to boost the
fruit growth. I lost the very tip end (+ 6 ft. or so) on the #2 622.6 to
squash
vine borer, but a lot of secondaries are taking up the slack with a lot of
little
pumpkins on them. My four plants have engulfed my 40 x 90 ft. patch with
vines now growing on top of vines. How is the best way to get a little
control
of the plants without the damage I've experienced in the past? How do I
effectively bury vines? Which vines? Do I bury the end of vines to stop
their
gowth and have them remain intact? Hopefully Abracadabra will keep up
the pace.

Thanks,
Scott Parsons
