Greg, I had a couple of ideas from before....
First was trying to determine the causes of splitting/explosions, and if it
was cultural, or genetic (or both). Like recording when each split occurred,
the fertilizers applied, the temperatures, humidity, rainfall, sun, (if there
was a shade structure or not), etc.
Also the genetics of the seed, etc. and to try to find something that was
similar in most of the splits. Maybe we could trace the most likely causes,
once and for all. It COULD be surprising, who knows!
My other idea was finding out when the main surge in growth occurred in
various people's pumpkins, and what caused it. If we could extend that
"surge", who knows what weights could be achieved! I was going to do some
research myself on all of the 1000+ (or maybe 950+) pound pumpkins ever grown
to find out what cultural practices, weather conditions, rainfall,
temperatures, humididy, etc. is ideal for growing the big ones! I started to
do it but haven't had time to get back to it. I was researching the weather
almanacs for different 1000+ pumpkins on the days they were grown. I realized
that Simcoe, Ontario, Canada is not too far from me here in Toledo, Ohio! I
didn't even know that before! Gary Burke grew his world record there last
year. He is near Lake Erie just like I am, and we have close to the same
weather conditions, including lake effect, etc. It would be interesting to
find the keys to WHAT grows the BIG record winners. There is SOMETHING to it,
but no one knows what yet, for sure, since as we know most of the BIGGEST
ones have been grown in Canada. But WHY?
I am sure it could be found out by compiling almanac data long with surveys
of the 1000+ growers on cultural practices, etc. Or maybe just a survey of
all growers where they incluse their pumpkin's weigght, and try to find the
common denominators that lead to the BIG ones. (As well as the common
denominators that lead to the less than average sized ones). I wish I could
do it, but it would take me forever just to figure out how to go about doing
it. You guys who have done these things before are so good at it, and could
do a way better job than I ever could!
Well anyway, just a couple of ideas!
