RE: Late Start

We have a pumpkin "weigh-off" held each year at a local farm. The farmer is
a competitive AG grower who has done pretty well. His event is held a couple
of weeks after the official weigh-offs and is really for people to bring
their pumpkins to show off. It draws huge crowds and is fun.

Pumpkins shown at this event may not count to most folks on this list, but
the competition is still stiff. At this event, a 200 pound pumpkin is pretty
big and will probably win a prize.

So, I guess what I'm saying is there are competitions and there are
competitions. I bet there are pumpkin farms near most cities that hold such
events.

Getting a late start, IMHO, is better than waiting until next year. Get some
experience; learn first-hand about vine borers; keep the kids off the
streets; maybe win a prize. It's worth it.
