Burying vines in Grass

I spent two hours tonight burying my vines. Boy is that a lot of work! My questions is: I have two vines that are growing out of my garden and on to the grass. Would you put dirt & compost on the vines that are on the grass or do you just leave them exposed? Will the roots tap into the grass?
