Hi John. Guess what? You don't have to soak them in water or file
them. Granted, it does increase your odds greatly for germination but I
just put them in peat pots, kept them warm with a 60 watt bulb and added a
bit of water each day. I got germination. Granted I didn't get many but I
got some. Next year I will definatly go with filing the sides though and
then putting them in my peat pots. I have this weird theory that a seed
that can germite without major surgery and care will be stronger than the
babied seeds. Kind of like survival of the fittest. Now that is just my
theory, don't quote me on it or sue me later if it screws you
Now I am in California and I grew big maxes earlier this year. I had
to cut my fruit off a little early for space for my growing AG's but I got
a 47 llb fruit. Tell me if you beat it.
In answer to your question of polinating, you first need cool
temperatures. If you already have them, like under 85, you are fine. If
not, you need to find a way to cool off the area around the fruit when you
polinate. And to polinate, just simply take off the male flower, peel back
the pedals, and use the stamen (I think that is what it is called) as a
cotton swab. YOu know that yellow part with the pollen. Rub that on your
female flower, the flower with the pumpkin underneath it. The more male
flowers you use the better you chance of polination.
Also, feel free to ask any more questions. That is the only way to
learn. Best wishes
Greg
