RE: off-the-shelf seeds

I too am a first year grower, was unaware of the AG community and have
bought off the shelf Dill's Atlantic giant seeds. I set my fruit on June 25
and now have an OTT of 170 on day 35. I only have room for 1 plant and I
only set two fruit and pruned the smaller one off on July 5. My pumpkin
grows slow but steady compared to the big numbers I'm reading about on the
list. I think that given the current rate of growth my pumpkin should end
up around 300 lbs. Nothing really to brag about but it still is cool for
the neighborhood kids. The pumpkin really took off the first two weeks of
growth and was comparable to the big ones on the list but has slowed
considerably since then. Another problem we have had is the extremely hot
weather. Today it was 101 degrees at lunch time and I don't think many
pumpkins grow good in this weather. Hopefully August will cool down and I
will get the 10-20 lbs growth a day some of the others are getting. Good
luck with your pumpkins, I definately think genetics is the way to go. Keep
me informed if you don't mind on the growth of your pumpkins I would like to
compare to ensure that it wasn't just me. Thanks. Steve M. Elmhurst IL

Subject: off-the-shelf seeds

As a first time grower, I was not aware of the AG community out there
and instead of asking for seeds from a true giant, I simply bought some
of Dill's seeds from the hardware store.

Now that I have some fruit set, I'm a little worried about the quality
of these seeds. Will they really produce decent pumpkins? I'm looking
for others who have planted off-the-shelf seeds to share their stories
of success (or failure).

Also, does anyone know the process that Howard Dill (or his company) go
through to select seeds for sale? Does he improve stock from year to
year? Are they seeds from very large pumpkins?

This winter I will be pestering everyone for good seeds!

thanks
