shriveled leaves

can anybody advise me? The leaves around the base of my plant are all
shriveled up fo a distance from the center about 2.5-3.0 feet, now I
recently learned from this website that these plants have to have a
tremendous amount of water so I started watering heavy about 2 weeks
ago, my pumpkin itself is thriving (from the size of a baseball on
July 15th, to approx. 58 inches around now) and the shriveling has not
gotten any worse since I started watering heavy, can I asume this
occured because I the plant did not have enough water? any help is
certainly appreciated
