wicking?

This is my first year.
I've found some really old books that suggest wicking sugar water into
the vine to increase the pumpkin size.
Has anyone ever heard of this?  Or, is this just old fashioned stuff?
Also, My pumpkins have been orange since the day they bloomed.  Is that
normal for large varieties?
