New to group.
Hello All,
I came across this list yesterday after doing a search about
pumpkins. Am very happy to have found it. We live in McKean County Pa.,
western most, north central country, along the NY boarder. About 75
miles east of Erie and 10 miles out of Bradford, Pa. Home of the "Zippo"
lighter.
We moved here from RI 5 years ago and really enjoy living in the
hills, actually we live in a valley. It is my wife and two children, the
boy Nicholas is 3, 4 come December and Collen is 11 months, I am going
on 51!!!
It would seem that there are more pumpkin varieties out there than I
know about, we are familiar with the common types listed in all the
catalogs... ...in doing my search I came across varieties listed with
numbers and not names. Will need to do more research to find-out what
they are.
We grow pumpkins every year and have for many years. It was this year
that I thouhgt I would try my hand at some "serious" pumpkin growing.
That's when I found out that I know so little about this noble fruit.
I don't need to grow a 1000 pound giant this season but a nice 200
pounder would be a good start. "Big Max" seems to be a good starting
point. We normally grow for pies and decoration, this year I would like
to grow for "big".
So there you have it. I love pumpkins, always have, you don't find to
many long faces in a pumpkin patch, mostly smiles. There is something
about those nice bright orange globes that make people happy, well, here
anyway.
Any tips would be a great help. I have rad about the deer problems
most seem to have, same here. We planted a vast number of fruit and nut
trees here our fisrt two yeas and the deer had a field day with them.
Made no never mind what we tried the got to the trees. Now I read they
like to play football with pumpkins.
Thanks for your time.
