SE Minneota Update
June is finally here and now my pumpkins can really stretch out. May was
cool, windy, and wet. We two 5+ inch rainfalls two weeks apart with
about and inch of rain between them and 1-2 inches after the second 5+
inch rainfall. It was cloudy for over a week at a time a couple of times
and the temperatures were cool.
The row covers over my plants really helped protect them from the
weather (hard rains, frost, small hail, and wind) and the bugs. Now with
the warmer temperatures and sunshine, the pumpkins are starting to vine.
My pumpkin plant size numbers are not as good as many on this board, but
hopefully they will start catching up with the better weather.
The 693 Heyne 98 has the largest leaf at 16.5 inches and the longest
vine of 30 inches is from the 837 Thorson 99. My six best plants to this
point are:
837 Thorson 99
693 Heyne 98
858 Baird 97
1009 Eaton 99
511.5 Heyne 99
747.5 Burke 99
I have found more squash bugs (stink) on my plants this year than all my
previous years of growing AG pumpkins. This might be due to the mild
winter we just had in this part of the country. It seems that many of
you are running into the problem of squash bugs and vine borers much
earlier this year. All I can say, please do not send any more my way.
