Borer Alert & Questions

Hi Everyone,

I'm 98 percent sure I picked off a borer egg yesterday here in Springfield,
Virginia. When I picked it off, it flew then I couldn't find it again in
the dirt so I didn't have a chance to make a close inspection, but it was
pretty obvious. Couldn't find any others though.

A couple of questions:

If it's there in the dirt somewhere can it still hatch and try to find its
way back to a vine? I'm spraying of course, so I hope this is a
hypothetical question.

Also, at what point are these things "taken care of" by the sprays? Should
the spray kill or deter the moth? Or destroy the egg before it hatches? Or
kill the little beastie right when it hatches? I'm guessing the beast is
most vulnerable right after hatching, but I have NEVER seen one then. I've
seen the moth, the eggs, and the holes in the vine. I've never caught a
newly-hatched one just digging in.

Beth
