Wisconsin - Thorson 837 Update

Hi all. Only have room for one plant in my 20x20 plot, and Thorson 837 it
is.

Planted seeds indoors on 4/22.

Moved 2 plants outdoors on 5/2. Protected 3 sides with straw bales, covered
the top and south-facing side with storm windows. Survived golfball-sized
hail on 5/18 because of storm windows.

Tons of rain in May and June.

Culled one plant on May 27th. Removed all bales of straw at same time.

As of 6/22 (today): the main vine is 11 feet long, with 4 female buds
showing. Vine is buried to within a foot of first bud. First male flower
opened up this morning.

3 additional primary vines, each about 5 feet long, each with one female
bud. All vines are buried up to first female bud.

Heavy straw mulch is used under the leaf canopy. A spot check showed
VIGOROUS root growth under all mulch.

2 leaves are 23" across, many more are 22" across.

No bug problems yet. Have seen several cucumber beetles and squash bugs.
Rotenone dust has been the only remedy used so far, and it has successfully
shooed them away. No SVBs seen yet.
