Pumpkin magic is alive and well in the bipolar, powerless wheezing of California.  Even with cold days alternating with record heat, my plants are exceptional.  The main vine of the 789 Zunino started loping down the front patch at the break neck speed of 1/4 inch an hour a few days ago and now measures almost five feet - A magnificent, absolutely mythical plant - suitable perfection for an offspring of the goddess Athena.  The vine is already turning yellow - a clear indication that her fruit will be orange.

But real sorcery lurks in the rear patch, the lair of the dragon - the awesome...   the extraordinary...  846 Calai.  This plant is not of this world, and the world has never seen anything like it.  Three days from germination it had a dragon tap root over 16" long.  Now, a week younger than the 789 Zunino, it has twice the leaf surface area and a vibrant energy that makes your skin tingle when you approach too close.

The 846 Calai at 14 days from germination

It is growing so fast that the stem has split near the ground unable to contain it's mutant force.  The largest leaves are over 20" in diameter and a deep velvet green.  The leaves seem to pulse with a manic energy - and mesmerize as they shimmer and undulate in the sun.  Even the cucumber beetles pass them by - their hunger erased by fear.

You can see the main vine is elongating but it has not yet begun to run.  You can hear the plant pant as it crouches in the heat ready to pounce down the patch.  You can feel it's power as it reaches for the noon day sun.  You can smell the acrid stench of the hidden dragon root breathing smoke and fumes in it's lair beneath the ground.  It gulps the offerings of fish and kelp I toss from a safe distance and glowers for more.  I know it desires a young virgin girl but we have to set some limits.

The 937 Mombert and the 983 Ciliberto in the rear patch bow humbly to the Calai.  They are both doing well but may as well be different, inferior species.  There is no comparison.  The Calai rules supreme.

The extraordinary will happen here
from the midst of the dragon's keep.
You can hear the tiger roar
and dragons never sleep.
